Traditionally, ice I was considered to exist in two well-defined crystalline forms at ambient pressure: stable hexagonal ice (ice Ih) and metastable cubic ice (ice Ic). However, it is becoming increasingly evident that what has been called cubic ice in the past does not have a structure consistent with the cubic crystal system. Instead, it is a stacking-disordered material containing cubic sequences interlaced with hexagonal sequences, which is termed stacking-disordered ice (ice Isd). In this article, we summarise previous work on ice with stacking disorder including ice that was called cubic ice in the past. We also present new experimental data which shows that ice which crystallises after heterogeneous nucleation in water droplets containing solid inclusions also contains stacking disorder even at freezing temperatures of around -15 °C. This supports the results from molecular simulations, that the structure of ice that crystallises initially from supercooled water is always stacking-disordered and that this metastable ice can transform to the stable hexagonal phase subject to the kinetics of recrystallization. We also show that stacking disorder in ice which forms from water droplets is quantitatively distinct from ice made via other routes. The emerging picture of ice I is that of a very complex material which frequently contains stacking disorder and this stacking disorder can vary in complexity depending on the route of formation and thermal history.

Hexagonal diamond has been predicted computationally to display extraordinary physical properties including a hardness that exceeds cubic diamond. However, a recent electron microscopy study has shown that so-called hexagonal diamond samples are in fact not discrete materials but faulted and twinned cubic diamond. We now provide a quantitative analysis of cubic and hexagonal stacking in diamond samples by analysing X-ray diffraction data with the DIFFaX software package. The highest fractions of hexagonal stacking in materials previously referred to as hexagonal diamond are below 60%. The remainder of the stacking sequences is cubic. We show that the cubic and hexagonal sequences are interlaced in a complex way and that naturally occurring Lonsdaleite is not a simple physical mixture of cubic and hexagonal diamond. Instead, it is structurally best described as stacking disordered diamond. The future experimental challenge will be to prepare diamond samples beyond 60% hexagonality and towards the so far elusive ‘perfect’ hexagonal diamond.Graphical abstract

During the Kaiju attack on San Francisco. Tamsin and Luna volunteer to help the United States Air Force in the attack on the Trespasser and head for the Vandenberg base. Despite their combined forces, the aerial attack against the creature isn’t enough to do anything but wound it. When Luna attempts to fire a sidewinder down the Trespasser’s throat, Tasmin warns her of an oncoming attack. Despite her efforts, Luna is killed when the creature slashes her jet in half. The loss of Luna hits Tamsin and Stacker hard. 
When Jaeger Program is initiated, both Tamsin and Stacker train to become Rangers in the PPDC’s growing forces. They are later assigned to the Coyote Tango as co-pilots. On May 15, 2016, Tamsin and Stacker fight to defend Tokyo from the Onibaba ’s attack. However, during the battle, Tamsin passes out, leaving Stacker to pilot and kill the Kaiju on his own.  Their efforts manage to save a young Mako Mori.
Shortly thereafter, Tamsin learns that she’s developed cancer from exposure to the Coyote Tango’s nuclear reactor. As a result, she and Stacker were retired from active duty as Rangers. Though she’ll receive treatment, Tamsin has little hope of her survival. Stacker tries to argue against the ruling, but Tamsin urges him to move on with his life.
Shortly after Stacker is promoted to PPDC Marshal, he visits a weakened Tamsin in the hospital. He introduces her to Mako Mori, the girl whom she saved in Tokyo. His gesture brings Tamsin to tears and the three embrace. Tamsin continued to receive extensive treatment for her cancer; for a time the disease went into remission and it appeared she would survive. However, her illness returned and she died. Tamsin was buried in Hawaii, where Stacker and Mako would visit to pay their respects. Trivia

We demonstrate that in random-stacking hard-sphere colloidal crystals the stacking disorder not only exists in the direction perpendicular to the close-packed layers, but also extends in the lateral direction.
